When friends or loved ones are struggling and tell us their problems or share negative emotions, we may feel like we need to jump in and help. Sometimes we have a tendency to problem solve or try to quickly make the person feel better. We may feel pressure to find the rights words or the best thing to say.
One of the best things you can do is actually just be present, listen, and show that you care. Showing that person that you are there to listen goes a very long way. If someone has been coming to you with their struggles and you have felt pressure to help, please know that just being there are connecting with them is helping. You do not need the perfect response.
Connecting makes a world of difference.
This is a great video by Brene Brown. This video explains the impact and importance of empathy and not jumping to problem solving. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Evwgu369Jw
